In part one i appreciate the reminder that the Islamic family system is different than cultural ideas of what family should be. Instead there are roles, rules and guidelines that make family work. Jesica...
I just started the book and wow is it food for thought. Summarizing the first chapter, it mentions how there are different ways we understand the world. One is through learning and another is instinctual. When you are hungry no one has to teach you to eat. That is an example of instinctual learning. The chapter goes on to remind us that calling out when you are in need, (praying) is another instinctual behavior. However, so people hesitate to go to prayer. If one behaves in this manner it is a type of sickness. When we are sick for instance we do not want to eat, even though it is our instinct to eat when we are hungry. Sickness however will make you hesitate to eat. The same hold true with calling on your creator. When we hesitate to call out to him it because we are spirtually sick. Deep stuff!
Salaam This is the second time I am reading this book and it is amazing. We try to adopt the things we learn as a family. Since reading the first chapter all of us started to do the salaatul lail (http://www.al-islam.org/salatallail/) Alhamdolillah
